Culture is at least as powerful in shaping how we experience and express
same-sex attraction as our innate natures.

How Culture Works

Culture can be understood as a response to the
complexity. The world around us bombards us with
millions of pieces of information.  Culture is a way of
simplifying the task of living.

Culture gives us a simplified story about how the world works. Most of the
time we only see the information mentioned in the story, and our brains filter
out the other information.
More

Culture gives us a script for how to behave.  Rationally deducing every action
would overload our brains. Instead we learn strategies of behaviour that
other people have used successfully.
More

Occasionally we have experiences our cultural story cannot explain, or we
find ourselves in situations we do not have scripts for.
 This is being
'unscripted'. These situations force us to delve into the emotionally,
intellectually and time consuming task of developing new stories and scripts.
More

Culture is human’s most powerful system of social control. The combination
of shaping our sense of reality and giving us scripts on how to act makes it
the ultimate system for influencing people’s behaviour.
