Culture gives us scripts about how a person like us is supposed to behave.

Life is complicated. Most of the time we do not sit and rationally calculate all of
our actions. Instead we copy behaviours we have seen other people use.   We
follow social scripts about what a person like us is supposed to do in a situation
like this.

Our culture provides us with a range of scripts to choose from. We select the
script that fits the situation and how we feel about it, and then we perform the
script.

Most of the time, the process of script selection is unconscious. We slip
straight into a familiar script in a familiar situation without even thinking about it.
This is the operating mode that takes least brain power.

Some of the time, we are conscious we have an important decision to
make
about how to behave in a situation, and we can reflect on the script we
use. We can consciously try to adopt a different script. This takes a lot more
effort.

We can develop new scripts when we discover old ones do not work, or
just do not fit us. But scripts exist because they are cognitive short cuts - over
riding them takes a large amount of brain power.   See
unscripted experiences.

"I always swore I would be nothing
like my mother. But as the years go
by, I see her in everything I do.
Whether it is how I do housework or
the way I argue."
"When my brother came out the way
he dressed and walked and talked
changed."
"I behave completely differently
at work to the way I do with my
footy friends. It is not conscious,
but my whole body language
and way of talking changes."
"When I am around my family I
transform from successful adult
back to being the youngest
child."
