Borrowing Across Gender

Finally, some sensory men and earthy women borrow across gender.  Women
express their earthiness by borrowing culturally male clothes, body language and
ways of behaving. Similarly, some sensory men adopt culturally female forms of
expression in the way they walk, talk and express their feelings.

Unscripted People Often Switch Scripts Over Time

It is common for unscripted people to change the scripts that they use over time. As
they move through the world they come across new scripts that they can use to
express themselves.

People also often shift scripts when they go from emphasizing one part of themselves
to emphasizing other parts of themselves. Changing relationships, jobs and
parenting roles can change the scripts people use to express themselves.

GLBTQ Diversity : Butch from Birth
Gender Scripts
I have always felt more comfortable in
men's underwear and men's jeans.
I just seemed to grow up more like
my Dad than my Mum. I tell stories
and jokes the same way he does.
Guys are always telling me do I have to
act like that - well yes I do unless I am
going to have a personality transplant!
I always liked girlie stuff, it is so much
more interesting and pleasant than
sport and cars!

It is common for small children to borrow across gender.  When children are
very young there are only two types of people - boys and girls - and the
categories are very rigid. It is very common for people to have been tomboys or
to be have been little boys who like dresses.

As children get older they start to find a wider variety of types of men and women.
The social sanctions against borrowing across gender also get a lot more
severe. Social pressure forces many to find other scripts to express being
sensory men or earthy women.
